Lead 101
After you have honed your climbing and belaying skills on toprope, it's
time to learn the fundamentals of leading. Learning to lead can add a
whole new twist to the sport, making it more fun and definitely more interesting.
Sport climbing as it is called differs from toproping in that it doesn't
rely on anchors at the top of the climb. The climber trails the rope behind
him and clips it into anchors along the way up the route. This type of
climbing opens the door to roofs and other overhanging climbs that can't
be done with a toprope. Leading is much more involved than toproping so
proficiency at climbing and belaying are a must.
Students will learn the proper techniques
to belay a lead climber. They will also learn how to tie into the 'sharp
end' of the rope and lead routes. After completing the lead class, students
will have the knowledge to lead climb in an indoor environment.
Class cost is $35 which includes two hours of instruction,
the use of a lead rope and quickdraws, and climbing for the rest of the
day after the class.
Classes are every other Saturday from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.
